Junior Harsh Mankad advanced to the third round of the NCAA Singles Championship Thursday morning in College Station, Texas. He defeated Oggie Kolev from Arkansas, 6-3, 6-2. Mankad will face John Fruttero of California tomorrow, his first ranked opponent. After two rounds of play, seven of the top 16 seeds have been ousted.
Mankad and Thomas Haug also began play in doubles and earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over the nation's 14th-ranked doubles team, Johan Berg and Al Garland of Pepperdine. It was their second win over the Pepperdine duo in the past two weeks.
Next up for Mankad and Haug is a meeting with No. 9 Nick Rainey and Ryan Moore of USC. The Trojans won the NCAA Team Championship this past Monday. Earlier this season in a 4-3 Golden Gopher upset, Rainey and Moore defeated Mankad and sophomore Chris Wettengel, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Haug missed the match due to injury.
