Mankad Named to Verizon Academic All-American Third Team

University of Minnesota junior tennis player Harsh Mankad has been named to the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American Men's At-Large Third Team. The 2002 Big Ten Player of the Year, Mankad has maintained a GPA of 3.71 in his major of economics.

A native of Mumbai, India, he was the nation's top-ranked singles player for much of the season and finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 26-5 overall record and an 8-0 mark in the Big Ten. Along with doubles partner Thomas Haug, Mankad earned his first All-America honor, reaching the quarterfinals of the doubles competition at the 2002 NCAA Championships.

A standout on the court and in the classroom, Mankad's list of credentials is extensive. He is a three-time U of M scholar-athlete, the 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Sportsman of the Year, the 2000 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, a three-time All-Big Ten selection, a member of the Academic All-Big Ten Team, an Arthur Ashe Junior Sports Scholar, a member of India's Davis Cup team and the winner of the 2001 ITA Indoor Championship.
