Men's Tennis Opens ITA Midwest Regional in Winning Fashion

weThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team opened the 2003 ITA Midwest Regional Championship today with solid performances in singles and doubles action in East Lansing, Mich. The Golden Gophers went 2-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.

In the singles draw, Clay Estes opened play with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Tommy Dennis of Western Michigan. With the win, Estes gained the right to face top-seeded Jeremy Wurtzman of Ohio State tomorrow at 9 a.m. Avery Ticer also began the tournament with a straight-set win, downing Notre Dame's Eric Langenkamp, 6-1, 6-3. The lone Golden Gopher to lose on the first day was No. 11 seed Chris Wettengel, a 6- 1, 7-6 (5) loser to Juan Barriga of Northern Illinois.

In doubles action, Estes and Ticer moved to the round of 32 with an 8- 1 win over Drew Forsberg and Matt Kinst of Western Illinois. The Golden Gophers will take on Klint Knable and Paul Newman of Ball State tomorrow.

The Midwest Regional's singles champion and runner-up as well as the doubles champion automatically advance to the ITA National Championships in early November.
