raiThe University of Minnesota men's tennis team kicked off its fall season today at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Three Golden Gophers advanced to the second round before rain delayed the afternoon session. The season-opening tournament continues through Sunday at the University of Alabama.

In Open Singles A, sophomore Raoul Schwark began his 2005-06 campaign with a close 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2) win over Anton Marvin of UAB. Schwark will take on No. 2 seed Joseph Jung of Alabama tomorrow morning.

In the Open Singles B draw, No. 3 seed Adrien Debreyne overwhelmed Mississippi State's Florent Girod, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round. Debreyne faces Virginia's Eric Riley tomorrow. Rounding out the Golden Gopher win was captain Mikey Kantar's 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 8 seed Bradley Weaver of Samford. Kantar takes on Bernado Bachino of Jacksonville State Saturday morning.

Eighteen teams and 94 athletes from across the nation are participating in the Crimson Tide Fall Championships, which continue through Sunday. The tournament includes 10 singles players currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s top 100. The tournament features three flights of singles, three flights of doubles and two flights of One-on-One doubles. There will be a back draw for each flight so players are guaranteed at least three matches.

Minnesota has one doubles duo in the tournament (Debreyne/Schwark), while Kantar is the lone Golden Gopher in the One-on-One Doubles draw.

One of the featured draws at the tournament will be the Alabama Collegiate One-on-One Championships. One-on-One doubles is a unique style of tennis developed by Ed Krass, normally used by tennis coaches in practice to help foster a serve and volley game as well as improve doubles skills. However, Alabama has implemented it into this weekend’s competition slate. In One-on-One doubles, two opponents, one on each side, play on just half the court diagonally from each other and must serve and volley on both first and second serves. This is just second time the format is being used in collegiate tennis.

Scoring for the Alabama Collegiate One-on-One Doubles Championships will be in eight-game pro-sets and the event’s semifinals and finals, to be played on Sunday, will be televised for FOX College Sports Atlantic to be aired on Sunday October 16 at 6 p.m cst.
