MTN: Golden Gophers Struggle at Opening Day of Denver Invitational

In Flight A of singles, Andres Osorio, D.J. Geatz and Sion Wilkins each lost in the round of 32 in their first matches of the fall season. Osorio dropped a close 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 match to Utah's Miron Mann, Geatz fell 6-4, 6-3 to No. 7 seed Jan Zelezny of Colorado and Wilkins lost 7-6 (4), 6-3 to New Mexico's Johnny Parkes.
After dropping their opening round matches, each Golden Gopher found success in the consolation draw, advaning to the quarterfinals. Osorio was on the winning end of a close match, upending No. 5 seed and 97th-ranked Max Jones of New Mexico, 7-6, 7-5. Geatz rebounded to cruise to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Denver's Steve Flaks, while Wilkins downed Kevin Borzenski of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-2.
In the lone doubles match of the day, Minnesota's duo of Geatz and Osorio defeated New Mexico's Chandler Brass and Derek Lynch, 8-1, to advance to the round of 16.
The 2005 Denver Invitational features two flights of singles competition consisting of 32 players with a consolation round in each. The doubles bracket is a single-elimination open field of 32 pairs.
