Mikey Kantar Advances to Main Draw of ITA Midwest Regional

University of Minnesota men's tennis player Mikey Kantar went 2-0 today to advance to the main draw of singles play at the 2006 ITA Midwest Region Championships at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
In qualifying singles play, the Gophers put up a good fight, but only sent Kantar to the main draw. Kantar downed Tommy McGeorge of Iowa, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32 before cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tetta Oyama of Ball State to move into the round of 64 in the main draw. In other qualifying singles action, Western Michigan's Kevin Hayward defeated the Gophers' Pham 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and Eric Hodgman of Purdue beat Minnesota's Sion Wilkins 7-6, 6-3.
Minnesota's Mikey Kantar and Raoul Schwark defeated Jimmy Brannon and Tetta Oyama Of Boston State, 8-2, in doubles play today, making them the only team from Minnesota to advance to the second round. Yet, Ball State's Aaron Phillips and Jorge Rodriquez downed the Gophers' Pierre Dumas and Chi Pham, 8-3, and Matt Christianson and Willy Lock of Northwestern beat Minnesota's Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins, 8-6, in doubles play. Also in doubles, Peter Aarts and Scott Bruckmann of Michigan defeated Minnesota's Nic Edlefsen and DJ Geatz, 8-6.
Play will continue tomorrow with the 64-player singles main draw beginning at 8 a.m., and the doubles round of 32 starting at 4 p.m.
