Four Gophers Advance to Second Round of ITA Regional

The Gopher men’s tennis team continued their strong play today at the ITA tournament advancing four of their five players to the round-of-32 main draw singles which will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. The success did not transfer over to doubles play, however, as Mikey Kantar and Raoul Schwark were defeated Notre Dame’s Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu, who were the number two seed.
Nic Edlefsen, Andres Osorio, Raoul Schwark, Mikey Kantar and DJ Geatz represented Minnesota in the main draw singles. Sixth seeded DJ Geatz got the ball rolling for the Gophers by defeating Marquette’s Mark Rutherford in two sets. The other two seeded Gophers, Nic Edlefsen and Andres Osario, who were ranked fourteen and twenty respectively, both pulled out three-set victories. The story of the day for Minnesota, though, was unseeded Raoul Schwark’s three-set victory over the number one seed, Bryan Koniecko from Ohio State. Mikey Kantar lost a hard-fought battle to Indiana’s Mike McCarthy in three sets.
