Gophers in First Place After Day One of Southern Scuffle

The second-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team leads after the first day of competition at the 2006 Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C.

Minnesota collected a total of 59.5 points and holds a small lead over Edinboro, who sits in second with 53.5 total points. Cornell (52), Missouri (50.5) and Cal St.-Bakersfield (42.5) round out the top five.

Individually, top-ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad has dominated the competition thus far, collecting pins in each of his first three matches. He has yet to see the third period in any bout.

Three other Gophers also scored bonus points in each of their matches on Friday. No. 9 Jayson Ness had two pins and one tech fall on the day, while fifth-ranked Manuel Rivera began with a pin and two major decisions. After a first-round bye, second-ranked Roger Kish had a tech fall and a pin on the first day of competition.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals for Minnesota were top-ranked Dustin Schlatter, true freshman Scott Glasser and No. 8 Gabriel Dretsch, who all remain unbeaten through day one. Still alive in wrestle-backs are Mike Thorn, Tyler Safratowich, Jeremy Larson and Justin Bronson.
