Gopher Fall Invitational Complete Through Day 2

The University of Minnesota men's tennis team completed its second day of play at the 2006 Gopher Fall Invitational today at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers went 6-4 in singles play and 2-3 in doubles action. The 2006 Gopher Fall Invitational runs Sept. 29-Oct. 1, and features Minnesota, Drake, Iowa, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Green Bay competing in a mock dual format. Tomorrow's final day of competition will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Maroon and Gold opened the day with a 1-1 showing in doubles play against arch-rival Wisconsin. Mikey Kantar and Raoul Schwark picked up the win with an 8-5 victory over Felipe Bellido and Gian Hodgson. In Minnesota's second doubles dual, Iowa took a 2-1 edge with UM's lone win coming at No. 1 with Andres Osorio and Sion Wilkins downing Greg Holm and Tommy McGeorge, 8-3.
In singles action, the Golden Gophers went 3-1 against the Badgers and 3-3 against New Mexico. D.J. Geatz, ranked 37th in the nation, opened his season with a 1-1 record, defeating UW's Michael Muskievicz, 6-2, 6-1, before falling to 90th-ranked Max Jones of UNM, 6-1, 6-2. Nic Edlefen, ranked 84th, lost 6-0, 6-1 to the Lobos' Graeme Kassautzki in his lone singles match of the day. Geatz and Edlefsen will compete in next week's Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Geatz will play in the main singles draw, while Edlefsen will compete in qualifying singles. The duo will also take part in the doubles draw.
