Wernet wins Wildcat Invitational

Minnesota freshman Tobias Wernet closed out his run at the Wildcat Invitational with a straight-sets victory over fellow Gopher freshman Sebastian Gallego to capture the Flight A singles title at Northwestern Sunday.

Wernet won the hard fought match 7-5, 6-4 to complete his weekend with a perfect 4-0 record. The victories improved Wernet to 6-1 on the young season.

Minnesota sophomore Dino Bilankov also won his Flight A singles match Sunday. After dropping the opening set to DePaul’s Vanja Grgec, 7-5, Bilankov rallied to with set two, 6-3, then closed out the match with a 10-7 win in the tie-breaker.

Other Gophers in action on Sunday included junior Adam Altepeter and freshman Derek Peterson. Altepeter lost in his Flight B consolation match to Alex Sanborn of Northwestern, 7-6 (5), 6-0, while Patterson fell to Alasdair Graetz of DePaul, 6-2, 6-2, in the consolation bracket of Flight B.
