Schwark Falls In Quarterfinals at ITA Midwest Regional

10/21/2007 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis

Minnesota’s Raoul Schwark won his Round of 16 match against Iowa’s Bart Van Monsjou, but couldn’t get past Notre Dame’s Brett Helgeson as the senior was eliminated from the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The match between Schwark and Van Monsjou when about as long as possible as the two battled through a three-set thriller that was ultimately decided by a tie-breaker.

Schwark took the opening set, 6-3, before Van Monsjou roared back to win the second, 0-6. With the match on the line, Schwark captured a third-set tie breaker (7-5[4]) to reach the quarters.

But the battle with Van Monsjou would ultimately take its toll, however, as Schwark fell to Helgeson in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The Minnesota men’s tennis team will close out the fall portion of its 2007-08 slate Nov. 9-11, when the Gophers travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the Big Ten Singles Championship.
