University of Minnesota senior Raoul Schwark was recently named to the All-Big Ten men’s tennis squad, becoming the first Gophers’ player since 2004 to earn the honor in consecutive seasons.
Schwark, a Dalheim, Germany native, compiled a season record of 23-15, including a 7-12 mark against ranked opponents. He was 5-5 in Big Ten play and played all of his singles matches at the No. 1 position.
Schwark was especially tough during the fall season where he posted a 12-3 record and a 2-2 mark in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association championships in Tulsa, Okla. He was nationally ranked the entire season, reaching a season high of No. 41. Schwark concluded his career with the Gophers with an 88-44 singles record, including 27-13 against Big Ten competition.
He is the first Minnesota player to earn All-Big Ten honors in consecutive years since Aleksey Zharinov in 2003-04. This season marks the 11th straight year Minnesota has landed a player on the 12-player All-Big Ten team.
In addition, Minnesota freshman Tobias Wernet, a Mainz, Germany native, was the Gophers’ representative on the league’s All-Sportsmanship team. Wernet had a strong start to his career with a 17-8 record, including victories in nine of his last 11 matches of the year following a mid-season injury.
Ohio State’s Bryan Koniecko was named the league’s Player of the Year and Buckeyes’ coach Ty Tucker earned Coach of the Year honors. Wisconsin’s Marek Michalicka was named the Freshman of the Year.
