Five Gopher Men Included in NCAA Track Championships Field

Five members of the Minnesota men’s track & field team are headed for the national track championships as the NCAA announced its field of 544 athletes making up the competition list for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Drake plays host to the Championships on June 11-14, in Des Moines, Iowa. All five Golden Gophers will be making their first appearance at the national track meet.
Sophomore Ben Peterson and true freshman Hassan Mead earned automatic berths in the NCAA field with top-five finishes at last weekend’s NCAA Midwest Region Championships. Peterson placed fifth in the pole vault, while Mead was fifth in the 5,000-meter run.
Sophomore R.J. McGinnis will compete in decathlon as his point total of 7,290 from the Big Ten Championships was good enough to be included in the NCAA field of 26 decathletes.
Chris Rombough and Aaron Studt earned at-large berths into the NCAA Championships field. At-large bids are awarded if an athlete owns a high-ranked time or mark on the national performance list and finished in the top 12 at the regional championships. Rombough will join Mead in the 5,000 meters, while Studt will compete in the shot put.
