Altepeter's Three Wins Pace Gophers at Northwestern

Adam Altepeter won three straight consolation matches after a heartbreaking opening-round loss to lead the Minnesota men’s tennis team during weekend play at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
Altepeter pulled out a pair of tight victories in the B singles flight, beating Michigan State’s Clark Richardson 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6 and Toledo’s Leo Henriquez 7-5, 2-6, 13-11 after taking his first consolation match 6-2, 6-1 over Bradley’s Mitch Osborne. All three wins came after his opening-round loss to Toledo’s Gursher Harika 4-6, 6-3, 16-14.
Gophers’ freshmen Michael Sicora and Philip Arndt both posted a pair of victories in the A flight consolation draw. Sicora beat Vanja Grgec of DePaul 6-2, 6-3 and Callen Fraychineaud of Bradley 6-2, 6-3 before being knocked out by Josh Graves of Northwestern 6-3, 6-2. He lost his opening match to fourth-seeded Kevin Hayward of Western Michigan 6-2, 7-6 (3). Arndt capped his weekend with wins over Alasdair Graetz of DePaul 6-4, 6-2 and Milos Romic of Bradley 6-2, 6-4. The wins came following setbacks to Northwestern’s Alex Thams 6-2, 6-3 and Toledo’s Knot Likitkumchorn 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.
Also in the A flight, Jake Annear won his final match after dropping his first two contests. He won a pair of tiebreakers for a 7-6, 7-6 win over Ben Hartman of DePaul after losing to second-seeded Marc Dwyer of Northwestern and Jay Miller of Toledo 6-2, 6-0.
Eddie Svenda won his final match in the B flight after two defeats with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 win over Wade Ward of Toledo. He lost to Juan Munoz of DePaul 7-5, 6-3 and Jason Norville of Western Michigan 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Minnesota dropped all five of its matches over the weekend. Arndt and Sicora were 0-3 in the A flight with losses to Austin Brooks and Billy Gardner of Michigan State 8-4, second-seeded Austin Doerner and Grgec of DePaul 8-6 and Reinoud Haal and Austen Krauss of Iowa 8-5. Annear and Svenda suffered B flight losses to Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos of Iowa 8-5 and Skyler Engel and Henriquez of Toledo 8-5.
