Three Gophers Take Three Wins at Big Ten Indoors

Three Minnesota players each won three matches as the Big Ten Indoor Championships over the weekend in East Lansing, Mich.
Phillip Arndt, Julian Dehn and Jonathan Hadash each took three wins during the tournament. Dehn also teamed with Derek Peterson to take the A Flight doubles consolation title, while Hadash joined Illinois' Connor Roth to win the B flight doubles consolation crown.
It was the Gophers' final competition of the fall season. The tournament featured competitors from all 11 Big Ten schools.
Arndt won his opening singles match over C.J. Griffin of Penn State 6-0, 6-4 and dropped into consolation with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to third-seeded Josh McTaggart of Indiana. In consolation play, he beat Garret Dunn of Iowa 7-6, 7-6 and Chris Cha of Michigan 6-3, 6-1 before losing to Northwestern's Andrew McCarthy 6-1, 3-6, (10-8).
Dehn was victorious in his first singles match over Wisconsin's Varun Chari 7-6, 6-2, but lost in the second round to Eric Spector of Northwestern 7-6, 6-4. He rallied with two consolation wins over Taylor Cohen of Penn State 6-4, 6-2 and P.J. Rose of Purdue 5-7, 6-0, (11-9), but then lost to Alex Sanborn of Northwestern 1-6, 6-4, (10-5).
Hadash fell in his singles opener to Tobias Reitz of Northwestern 6-2, 6-4 and then came back with three straight consolation wins. He beat Patrick Dwyer of Iowa 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and downed Tommy Aliber of Indiana 6-1, 6-1 before defeating Spencer Wolf of Northwestern 6-2, 4-6, (10-8). Hadash was knocked out by Northwestern's Mark Schanerman 6-4, 6-4.
Brendan Ruddock won his first match over Wolf 6-3, 6-4, but was sent into consolation by Ryan Gormley of Penn State with a 6-3, 6-2 loss. Ruddock beat Purdue's Bill Heuer 6-2, 6-3 and then lost to Reitz of Northwestern 1-6, 6-4, (10-8).
Michael Sicora opened with the tournament's top seed, Marek Czerwinski of Illinois, and lost 6-4, 6-2. He also lost his first consolation match to Schanerman of Northwestern 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Peterson lost both of his matches to Warren Hardie of Penn State 7-6, 6-0 and Cha of Michigan 6-0, 6-3. Eddie Svenda was defeated by Mark Bruche of Iowa 6-3, 7-6 and then lost a tight three-set match to Cohen of Penn State 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
In doubles, Peterson and Dehn won the A flight consolation title by beating Sicora and Arndt in the final 8-4. Hadash and Roth won the B flight consolation title with an 8-3 win over Ruddock and Svenda in the final.
