Minnesota Clinches Third Seed for Big Ten Tourney

For the second straight day the University of Minnesota men’s tennis team swept a Big Ten opponent, beating Purdue University 7-0 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
It marks the first time the Golden Gophers have swept back-to-back Big Ten matches since 2004 when they blanked Wisconsin and Indiana in consecutive outings.
The win gives Minnesota its most wins (18) since the 2003 season and clinches the No. 3 seed for next week’s Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Minnesota, ranked 33rd in the country, is now 18-6 overall and finished Big Ten play with a 7-3 record.
Three Gophers won both their doubles and singles matches against the Boilermakers. Sophomore Ishay Hadash won at the No. 1 doubles (8-5) with fellow sophomore Sebastian Gallego before Hadash won the No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3 and Gallego won the No. 3 singles 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Dino Bilankov also won both his doubles and singles matches, winning the No. 4 singles (6-4, 5-7, 6-3) after he had won at the No. 3 doubles with Adam Altepeter (8-2).
Both Tobias Wernet and Julian Dehn won their singles matches with Wernet winning the No. 2 singles and Dehn winning the No. 6 singles.
Freshman Phillip Arndt completed the sweep of Purdue when he won the No. 5 singles 7-5, 5-7, 1-0.
The University of Minnesota men’s tennis team will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. next week for the Big Ten Tournament. The tournament will run from April 23 through April 26. Final pairings will not be determined until after Sunday.
