Manheim, Pa. - The Golden Gopher Wrestling team remained at No. 6 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) top-25 poll when it was released today (Jan. 5), staying there for the fourth straight week.
Last week, Minnesota returned from the holiday break, competing first at the Southern Scuffle before closing the week with an Iowa State dual. At the Southern Scuffle the Gophers crowned two champions on their way to a second place finish, also notching a runner-up and two third place winners.
Against Iowa State, Minnesota dropped a hard-fought 19-16 decision, as each team won five matches. The Gophers led 13-12 with three matches to go, but the Cyclones won two of the final three for the win.
The Gophers have been among the top-six all season long, which also includes a stint at No. 5. Iowa remains No. 1, where they have been all season, garnering all 11 first place votes. The entire top-six remained the same, in fact, with Iowa State at No. 2, Ohio State at No. 3 and Oklahoma State and Central Michigan at four and five respectively.
Minnesota earned 210 points, edging No. 7 Cornell with 209 by a point. The Gophers hold a 3-2 overall record, as they head to the National Duals this weekend.
Among the Big Ten, Minnesota, Iowa and Ohio State are joined No. 12 Indiana, No. 14 Penn State, No. 18 Wisconsin, and No. 20 Illinois. With the exception of No. 3 Ohio State, Minnesota will face off this season with each of the Big Ten teams in the poll.
In the latest InterMat Individual rankings, eight Gophers landed among the best in the nation, most notably, Scott Glasser (Bismarck, N.D.) who enters the individual rankings at 174 for the first time all season, ranked No. 13. Glasser has beaten three ranked opponents in his last five matches. At 133, Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn.) is ranked highest, earning a No. 2 tally, and is joined at the top by Dustin Schlatter (Massillion, Ohio) who moves up to No. 2 this week. Zach Sanders (Wabasha, Minn.) is next in line, ranked sixth at 125, while Mike Thorn (St. Michael, Minn.) joins him in the top-10 at seventh at 141. Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Colo.) moved up from 184 to 197, and earns his first ranking at 197 of the season, landing at No. 15. Jake Deitchler (Anoka, Minn.), ranked No. 13 at 157, and Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.), ranked No. 18 at 149 are the final Gophers in the individual rankings.
