Friday's competition saw Minnesota face off in eight singles matches against Notre Dame. Sophomore Rok Bonin, who won the Denver Pioneer Invitational last week in Denver, Colo., with a 4-0 record continued his strong play in the fall as he rallied to beat Greg Andrews 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Phillip Arndt also dropped his first set, but came back to defeat Sam Keeton 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Brendan Ruddock was the only other Gopher who was victorious in the first round of competition. He downed David Anderson in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Sebastian Gallego made his fall debut on Friday and was defeated by Steven Havens 6-4, 6-2. Gallego, who is ranked No. 48 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings, was 20-11 last year and earned team Most Valuable Player honors for the second straight season. He finished last year ranked 68th in the country as the eighth alternate to the NCAA individual tournament. Gallego was Minnesota's lone all-Big Ten selection and went 5-8 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Juniors Julian Dehn and Michael Sicora lost close matches to their Irish foes. Dehn won the first set before dropping the next two to Tyler Davis. Sicora fell 7-6, 7-5 to Billy Pecor.
The two Gophers not competing in The Chowder Fest are freshman Ben Mirkin and senior Tobias Wernet. The No. 71-ranked Wernet is not playing because he will be representing Minnesota at the D'Novo/ITA Men's Division I All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., starting on Monday, Oct. 4.
