Men's Tennis Finishes Play At The Chowder Fest

The men's tennis team completed play today at its second fall tournament this weekend at The Chowder Fest in Cambridge, Mass. The four teams who participated in the event were host Harvard, Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina. Play was held both indoors at the Murr Center Tennis Courts and outside at Beren Tennis Center.

The Gophers played six singles matches against South Carolina on Sunday and won five of them. Sophomore Rok Bonin improved to 7-0 in fall play with a 6-4, 7-6 win against Alexander Kostanov. Bonin was 3-0 at The Chowder Fest after winning the Denver Pioneer Invitational last weekend with a 4-0 record.

Sophomore Brendan Ruddock also finished with a 3-0 record this weekend. He did not drop a set and finished a successful tournament with a tidy 6-2, 6-2 win against Harry Menzies.

Senior Sebastian Gallego earned his first singles win of the fall on Sunday. The No. 48-ranked Gallego, who was an all-Big Ten selection last year, beat Ivan Machado 6-4, 7-6. Julian Dehn and Michael Sicora also recorded victories for Minnesota. The Gophers were victorious in two of three doubles matches on Sunday.

The two Gophers who did not compete in The Chowder Fest were freshman Ben Mirkin and senior Tobias Wernet. The No. 71-ranked Wernet did not play because he will be represent Minnesota at the D'Novo/ITA Men's Division I All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., starting on Monday, Oct. 4.
