Wernet Falls At ITA All-American Championships

Senior Tobias Wernet competed Monday in the D'Novo/ITA Men's Division I All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Wernet, who is ranked No. 71 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings, was the lone Gopher in event which runs until Oct. 10. He was upset by Malte Stropp of Mississippi State 6-1, 7-6 (5).
The Mainz, Germany, native shared the team lead in victories (20) last year with fellow senior Sebastian Gallego. He had four wins over ranked foes and reached the semifinals of the ITA Regional Championships. The Gophers were 11-2 last year when Wernet won his match and 3-8 when he lost. He went 6-4 in Big Ten matches and is 21-9 in league play for his career.
The Gophers return to fall play at the Oct. 21-25 ITA Regional Championship in Norman, Okla.
