Junior Julian Dehn was the last of six Gophers left competing in the main 64-player draw at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The unseeded Dehn won his first four matches to advance to the semifinals, but was defeated there by No. 10 seed and eventual runner-up Peter Kobelt of Ohio State 6-3, 6-4.
The tournament, which began on Friday with doubles play and ended today with the singles final, was hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The majority of matches were held at Michigan State's indoor tennis facility, while some select matches were played at the Michigan Athletic Club.
On Saturday, Dehn rallied to beat Illinois' Brian Alden 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round and then beat No. 12 seed Billy Bertha of Wisconsin 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. He continued his winning ways on Sunday with a third round 7-6 (8), 6-4 victory against seventh-seed Josh MacTaggart of Indiana and then landed a spot in the semifinals after dispatching Isade Juneau of Indiana 7-6 (2), 7-5.
Michael Sicora and Brendan Ruddock joined Dehn in the round of 16 after two wins on Saturday, but lost their next matches. Sicora fell 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday to No. 13 seed Denis Bogatov of Michigan State, while Ruddock was defeated by Kobelt 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Derek Peterson and juniors Phillip Arndt and Eddie Svenda also competed in the event. Arndt won his first-round match, but then was relegated to the back draw with a second-round loss. That would be the last time he would lose as he won the back draw championship. Arndt defeated Petr Satral of Wisconsin in the semifinals and then won the back draw title with a 3-6, 6-4 (9) victory against Indiana's Jeremy Langer.
Last week the Gophers competed in the ITA Central Regional Championships in Norman, Okla. The team completes fall play at the Nov. 12-14 Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Miami, Fla.
