Wernet Wins Twice in Setback to Sooners

Tobias Wernet won in both singles and doubles, but Minnesota fell to 26th-ranked Oklahoma 5-1 on Friday in Norman, Okla.

Wernet knocked off 84th-ranked Ionut Beleleu at No. 2 singles 7-6, 6-4 for the Gophers' lone point of the match. He also teamed with Rok Bonin for an 8-7 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Sooners won the other two doubles matches to take the doubles point. Oklahoma also captured two three-set singles matches, making the match much tighter than the score indicated.

Minnesota had won its past two matches and now falls to 3-4 overall. Oklahoma has won four straight and is now 6-1 for the season.

After the Sooners took the doubles point, they won the next two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead. George Chanturia defeated Julian Dehn 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 and 80th-ranked Costin Paval edged Bonin 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3.

Wernet pulled the Gophers to within 3-1 with his victory, but Oklahoma clinched the match when David Pultr held off Dino Bilankov 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.

In the night's premier matchup, 11th-ranked Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma rallied to beat 37th-ranked Sebastian Gallego 4-6, 6-0, 7-6. Daescu won the tiebreaker by a 7-3 score. The No. 5 singles match was not finished.

Minnesota plays Sunday at Southern Methodist in Dallas.
