Ness, Schlatter Earn Top Seeds at Big Tens

Park Ridge, Ill. - The pre-seeds for the Big Ten wrestling championships were announced today (Mar. 2), with the University of Minnesota laying claim to two number one seeds. The 2010 Big Ten Championship runs Mar. 6-7 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Seniors Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn.) at 133 and Dustin Schlatter (Massillion, Ohio) at 157 each enter the tournament as the top seed at their respective weight classes. Ness is ranked No. 1 in the country and earns is second career No. 1 seed. He enters the championships with a perfect 23-0 record in his final season and is riding a 25-match win streak. At the Big Ten Championships last season Ness placed fourth in his first season at 133. In his freshman season of 2007, Ness earned his first career No. 1 seed, before becoming Big Ten champion at 125.
Schlatter begins the championships on a 14-match winning streak, having lost just once this season to sit at 14-1 overall. He moved from 165 to 157 midway through the year and has since rattled off a 6-0 record at his new weight class. He is ranked No. 2 in the country and will be looking for his third Big Ten title. This is the third time he enters the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed, with the first two coming in 2006 and 2007 where he went on to win Big Ten Titles at 149 as a freshman and sophomore.
With two No. 1 seeds, the Gophers trail Iowa with three and sit tied with Indiana for the second most top-seeds in the tournament.
The next highest ranked Gopher is No. 2 Mike Thorn (St. Michael, Minn.) at 141. Thorn went to his first Big Ten Championships last season as the fourth seed, finishing in fifth place. Also in the top-three heading to Ann Arbor, are Zach Sanders (Wabasha, Minn.) and Scott Glasser (Bismarck, N.D.). At 125, Sanders will be looking to improve on his fifth place finish from the 2009 Big Ten Championships as he enters with his highest career seed. Glasser, at 174, also earns the No. 3 seed, despite a 7-1 mark in Big Ten duals. However, Glasser did not face No. 2 Luke Manual of Purdue when the two teams met in January. 2010 will mark the second Big Ten Championship appearance for Glasser, having went for the first time last season at 165.
Ben Berhow (Hayward, Minn.) at heavyweight garners the No. 4 seed, while Sonny Yohn (Alamosa, Colo.) earns the No. 5 seed at 197. Yohn's younger brother Cody will be the No. 7 seed at 165 in his first Big Ten Championship appearance. Also entering the tournament No. 7 in his first appearance is Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) at 149.
Hosted by the University of Michigan, the 2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships begin on Mar. 6 at Crisler Arena with Preliminary round action at 11:00 a.m. Session two begins at 6:00 p.m. on Mar. 6 with session three at 12:00 noon on Mar. 7. Championship round action is set for 2:05 on Mar. 7.
