Gophers Finish Fifth at Big Ten Championships

The University of Minnesota rowing team finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships, hosted today by Michigan State in Laingsburg, Mich. Racing on Lake Ovid at Sleepy Hollow State Park, Wisconsin won its first Big Ten title with 148 points, followed by Michigan State with 132 and the Gophers finished fifth overall with 66 points.
Along with the championships, two Golden Gophers earned All-Big Ten honors. Senior Lucy Mulvey was named a first-team All-Big Ten, while sophomore Cassie Drozynski was named to the second team All-Big Ten.
Each boat competed in heats during the morning and then finals in the afternoon. The top two boats out of each heat advanced to the Grand Final, while the rest competed in the Petite Final. The most points are distributed in the Grand Final as well as in the top three boats, the First Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Eight and the First Varsity Four (boats qualifers for the NCAA Championships).
The Second Varsity Four held the Gophers’ best finish when it won the Grand Final and collected 14 points. Coxswain Adriana Gutierrez, Megan Lenarz, Grace Lorig, Kate Ladell and Elyse Weir led throughout the competition after winning both its heat and the Grand Final. In their morning heat, the Gophers edged out MSU in a time of 7:28.50 to 7:29.44. Going into the Big Ten Championships as a No. 1 seed, the Gophers cruised to nearly a six-second lead in the Grand Final as they won the event in 7:25.65, while MSU was second in 7:31.76.
The Gophers’ First Varsity Four won the Petite Final and gained nine points toward the team totals. Placed in Heat 2, the Gophers finished third in their heat with a time of 7:22.2. Coxswain Nicolle Fisher, Christine Beauparlant, Kathryn Switalski, Shannon Gates and Michele Peterson flew down the course in the Petite Final, finishing in a winning time of 7:26.47. Iowa was nearly 12 seconds behind the Gophers and finished second in 7:38.04.
The Gophers also held the No. 6 seed overall in the First Varsity Eight and raced against No. 8 MSU and No. 11 Michigan. The Gophers finished third behind the two ranked teams in the heat in 6:44.31 and were placed in the Petite Final. Coxswain Linnea Trandem, Cassie Drozynski, Erika Berg, Tracy Merth, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Krueger, Sarah Graham and Rebekah Brzozowski at bow clocked a time of 6:31.14. Iowa won the Petite Final in 6:29.22, while the Gophers followed and Indiana was third (6:44.31).
Holding the overall No. 6 seed in the Second Varsity Eight, the Gophers finished third in their morning heat, which placed them in the Petite Final. However, the Gophers’ boat of coxswain Sara Baldvins, Teresa Logemann at stroke, Christine Cira, Katelyn Nichols, Debbie Brzozowski, Alli Fast, Alyssa Kast, Becky Kinchen and Rachel Sartor at bow, earned a win in the Petite Final. The Gophers gained 18 points when they finished in the race in a time of 6:42.09, edging out Iowa’s boat in 6:44.71.
The Gophers finished second in the Petite Final of the Novice Eight competition. Coswain Emilie Sabourin, Alexandria Voss at stroke, Allison Putlak, Kayla Thom, Ali Haws, Liz Saindon, Arielle Flynn, Natalie Reker at bow held a third-place time of 7:35.0 in their heat, which placed them in the Petite Final. The Gophers then competed against Ohio State and Iowa in the 1N8 Petite Final. The Buckeyes clocked a time of 6:59.26, while Minnesota followed in second in 7:07.14.
In the Second Novice Eight, Minnesota won the Petite Final over Indiana. The Gopher boat of Alicia Gruenwald, Natalie Foshag at stroke, Elizabeth Barnes, Jenessa White, Jessica VanVliet, Alyssa Trelstad, Andrea Beczkiewicz, Melissa Ruggles and Jessica Tiffany placed third in their heat. Competing in the Petite Final, the Gophers clocked a time of 7:21.06 to win the event as Indiana finished in 7:32.54.
The Gophers will be off next weekend in order to prepare for the South/Central Sprints, May 15-16. The regional competition will be held in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
