Former Minnesota men's tennis standout Chris Wettengel begins play today at the US Open National Playoffs at The Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. The winner of the 16-player field earns a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, held Aug. 24-27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., home of the US Open.

Wettengel, who is seeded fourth, begins his quest for an opportunity to play in the US Open with a first-round match today against fellow American Phillip Eilers.

The 28-year-old Wettengel qualified for the event by winning the Northern California Sectional Qualifying Tournament, defeating longtime doubles partner Brad Weston 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in the final. Wettengel dropped just one set in five matches en route to the title.

Wettengel was the 2003 Big Ten singles champion and ended his college career with a 91-49 record in singles competition.
