Day One Complete at Denver Pioneer Invitational

Eight Gophers are in Colorado, and the only two players not competing are senior Sebastian Gallego and freshman Ben Mirkin. Gallego is ranked No. 48 in the Campbell/ITA Preseason Rankings after earning all-Big Ten honors and being named the team's Most Valuable Player last year.
Play began at 10 a.m. today as Minnesota played eight singles matches against New Mexico. Seven Gophers then returned to the courts at 2 p.m. to play Denver.
Sophomore Rok Bonin, whose twin brother Enej Bonin plays for Denver, led the Gophers with a 2-0 record. He beat Carl Ho in three sets in the morning and then defeated Fabio Biasion in the afternoon.
Senior Tobias Wernet, who is ranked No. 71, won his morning match against Ben Dunbar before falling to Yannick Weihs. Like Wernet, junior Phillip Arndt was also 1-1 on the day, as he won his afternoon match against Denver in three sets after losing 6-3, 6-3 in the morning.
Senior Derek Peterson and junior Eddie Svenda finished the day with a win and a loss, while junior Michael Sicora and sophomore Brendan Ruddock were 0-2. Junior Julian Dehn was the lone Gopher to play only once today. He won the first set against Joe Wood of New Mexico before dropping the next two.
On Saturday, Sept. 25, Minnesota plays Denver is four doubles matches at 1 p.m. and then plays New Mexico in eight singles matches at 2 p.m. The event concludes on Sunday, Sept. 26, with the Gophers playing Denver in eight singles matches at 10 a.m. before facing New Mexico in four doubles matches at 1 p.m.
The Gophers, who were 14-11 overall last season and 6-4 in Big Ten play, next compete in the Oct. 1-3 Harvard Invitational in Boston.
