Minnesota Wins Opener Against Marquette

The Minnesota men's tennis team opened the spring season with a 6-1 victory against Marquette at the Baseline Tennis Center on Saturday night. The 33rd-ranked Gophers clinched the win after Tobias Wernet, Sebastian Gallego, and Julian Dehn won their singles matches. Rok Bonin and Brendan Ruddock came out on top in singles, as well.
Minnesota started strong by winning all three doubles matches. Wernet and Bonin won a decisive 8-2 match against Marquette's Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Thibault Troude at No. 2 and Dehn and Ruddock took down Dan Mamlat and Logon Collins of the Golden Eagles, 8-4 at No. 3 to secure the doubles point.
At No. 1 doubles, the Gophers' Gallego and Philip Arndt roared back from a 7-2 deficit to eke out an 8-7 (3) win over Jonathan Schwerin and Jose Manuel Munoz, negating several potential match points.
In singles, Wernet became the first winner of the night by beating Schwerin 6-3, 6-0 in the fourth position and Gallego followed with a 6-0, 6-2 defeated of Munoz at No. 2. The Golden Eagles got on the board soon after when Mamalat beat Arndt 6-3, 6-1, but Dehn gave Minnesota the decisive fourth point when he beat Drake Kakar 6-3, 6-4.
Bonin, the tenth-ranked player in the ITA's Central Region, added a 6-4, 6-4 win and Ruddock finished off the contest with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Collins. Ruddock trailed 6-2 in the tiebreak of the first set, but reeled off six straight points to win 8-6.
The win improved the Gophers all-time record against Marquette to 4-0. It was their third consecutive season-opening victory.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles to play UCLA on Friday and either Fresno State or Florida State on Saturday.
