Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn advanced to the doubles semifinals of the USTA/ITA Central Region Tennis Championships with an 8-6 win against fifth-seeded David Cavalcanti and Matheus Pereira of Wichita State. Bonin and Dehn are 3-0 in the tournament after 8-4, 8-4 and 8-6 wins in the first three rounds.
The third-seeded Gophers face No. 1 overall seed Clifford Marsland and Ashley Watling of Tulsa for a right to play for the championship.
Bonin and Dehn have proved to be a formidable duo since pairing together last season. They were 16-1 a year ago and won the title at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic last fall. The pairing went 10-1 in dual-match action and were 6-0 in Big Ten play.
Bonin and Dehn are the only Gophers left playing at the USTA/ITA Central Region Tennis Championships.
Three Gophers-Michael Sicora, Eric Frueh and Mathieu Froment-competed in the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern this weekend as well. The tournament was halted early and there were not any championship matches played. Sicora and Frueh had advanced to the semifinals in their respective flights.
This is the second and third tournament that the Gophers are playing in this year, as they already competed in the Southern Intercollegiates last month. Minnesota will play in the Big Ten Singles Championships next weekend before hosting the Gopher Invitational in two weeks.
