The Minnesota men's swimming and diving team opens its 2011-12 schedule Friday against Big Ten-rival Wisconsin at the Natatorium. Events are scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m.
The Golden Gophers kicked off their season with an intrasquad meet last weekend, where Maroon narrowly edged gold, 152-148.
Zach Bolin led all competitors with three victories for the Gold team, claiming first-place honors in the 200 medley relay (1:31.66), the 50 freestyle (20.58) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:22.78), while Carl Newenhouse, Josh Hall and Kyler Van Swol each tallied two victories apiece for Maroon. Ben Griggs also added two wins for Gold.
Minnesota enters the event against the Badgers with a very strong senior class, as well as a plethora of talent in its returning junior and sophomore classes and incoming freshmen. "We are very excited to begin the intercollegiate schedule," men's head coach Dennis Dale said. "The Team is anxious to start competing against a real opponent. Anytime you go up against the Badgers, there is bound to be a little extra motivation."
Wisconsin had its first Big Ten meet of the season last week at home, falling to Iowa, 227.5 to 66.5.
