Minnesota senior Julian Dehn was named Big Ten men's tennis Athlete of the Week today after advancing to the semifinals in both singles and doubles of the Dick Vitale/Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic last weekend in Florida.
Dehn was 3-1 in singles play and defeated Gicomo Miccini of Arizona 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the quarterfinals. He also recorded a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win against Andrew Butz of Florida and a 1-6, 6-1, retired victory against No. 3 seed Chris Thiemann of Ole Miss.
He fell in the semifinals to Vlad Bondarenko of Oklahoma State 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
Dehn, who won the doubles title at the event last year with Rok Bonin, teamed with freshman Mathieu Froment this year. The Gopher duo was seeded third and received a first-round bye.
They beat Arizona's Miccini and Andre Vidaller 8-3 to advance to the semifinal round of the doubles draw.
This is Dehn's first Big Ten men's tennis Athlete of the Week honor. The last Gopher to be honored was Tobias Wernet (April 26, 2011).
The Gophers open the spring season Jan. 21 against Marquette at Baseline Tennis Center.
