The Minnesota men's tennis team continued play today at the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center. The four-day event, which features competitors from Minnesota, Denver, Nebraska and Notre Dame, concludes on Sunday.
There are four groups (A, B, C, and D) in the singles competition. Each group has two players from each team, totaling eight players for each group. Each player will play four other players within their group and no player will face someone on their own team. In addition, there will be no repeat matches against the same player. Group D has more players to accommodate teams that traveled more than eight players.
There are four groups (A, B, C, and D) in the doubles competition as well. Each group has one doubles team from each squad, totaling four teams for each group. Each doubles team will play each of the three other teams within their group. Again, Group D has more teams to accommodate teams that traveled more than eight players.
There will be one winner for singles and one for doubles in each group. The players will accumulate points based on their records within each group.
Freshman Leandro Toledo is leading the Gophers. He dropped Greg Andrews of Notre Dame 6-1, 6-4 to improve to 3-0 in singles on the weekend. Toledo also earned three-set wins against No. 28 Casey Watt of Notre Dame and No. 30 Enej Bonin of Denver.
Senior Phillip Arndt rallied to beat Notre Dame's Watt 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and is 2-1 in singles this weekend.
The event concludes tomorrow. Singles matches begin at 9 a.m. and are followed by doubles at 11 a.m. The final round of singles will begin at 12 p.m.
