Gophers Beat Nebraska, Win Streak At Five
2/19/2011 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
The No. 26 Minnesota men's tennis team won its fifth straight match on Saturday with a convincing 6-1 win at No. 41 Nebraska. The Gophers are now 6-1 on the year and are 5-1 against ranked competition. Their only loss came at perennial power No. 6 UCLA in late January.
Minnesota won the doubles point, but had to rally to so. The Huskers won the first doubles match of the day when Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim tripped up Tobias Wernet and Rok Bonin 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles.
The Gophers leveled the doubles competition at 1-1 after Brendan Ruddock and Julian Dehn triumphed 8-3 at No. 3 doubles against Calin Paar and Taylor Boney. Minnesota then claimed the pivotal doubles point when Phillip Arndt and Sebastian Gallego dispatched Sebastian Florczyk and Andre Stenger 8-3 at the No. 1 position.
Coach Geoff Young switched up his singles lineup, as he shuffled Bonin and Gallego at No. 1 and No. 2. It was Gallego's first match at No. 1 singles this year and he did not disappoint. The senior, who went 10-8 at No. 1 singles last year, dropped Paar in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Bonin earned his second win of the year and first at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) victory against Aumueller. Wernet won his match at No. 3 singles against Lindheim 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Arndt improved to 4-0 at No. 4 singles this season as he worked quickly to topple Tom Blackwell 6-2, 6-2. Ruddock improved to 6-0 at No. 5 singles this year with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win against Robert Schulze. Dehn suffered Minnesota's only loss on the day and he was felled by Florczyk 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Gophers put their five-match winning streak on the line this Friday when they play host to Drake at 6:30 p.m. at Baseline Tennis Center. The competition is free to all spectators.
