The Minnesota men’s tennis team won their third straight match at the Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, taking down 35th-ranked Boise State 5-2. The match capped a successful weekend for the Gophers, who beat No. 28 Virginia Tech 4-3 on Friday night.

“It was a great weekend. We beat two very good teams and we’re very excited about it,” said Minnesota head coach Geoff Young following the win. “I’m most happy with how the guys competed.”

The Gophers started out on a positive note by taking the doubles point, coming out on top in two of three evenly played matches. Brendan Ruddock and Julian Dehn took the first win at No. 3, beating Andrew Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin 8-5. Sebastian Gallego and Phillip Arndt finished off their match and clinched the doubles point minutes later by beating BSU’s Damian Hume and Scott Sears 8-6, thanks in large part to Arndt’s effecting serving.

In singles play, the Gophers got off to a fast start with quick straight-set wins from Ruddock at No. 5 and Arndt and No 4. Ruddock gave Minnesota the first singles point for the third consecutive match.

“[Arndt and Ruddock] had great wins,” said Young. “Not only did they win, they won convincingly in both matches, which is a big lift. Those two did fantastic.”

Gallego went on to seal the win for the Gophers by upsetting No. 85 Filipp Pogostkin in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Dehn added to Minnesota’s point total with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback win over Boise State’s Nathan Serke.

The Gophers improved their record to 4-1 and maintained a perfect 3-0 home record with the victory. They visit Big Ten-rival Wisconsin next Sunday for their first conference contest of the season.
