Gophers Compete in Two Meets This Week
Minnesota will have athletes competing in two meets this week, the Mt. SAC Relays, Thursday-Saturday, April 14-16, in Walnut, Calif.; and Concordia’s Holst Invitational on Saturday in St. Paul.

Mt. SAC Relays Distance Carnival
The Mt. SAC Relays annually feature great competitive distance races. A total of 19 Golden Gophers from the middle distance / distance ranks will travel to the meet.
Price, Swenson and Yetzer Compete in Olympic Development Races
Stephanie Price, Nikki Swenson and Elizabeth Yetzer will compete in top heats, termed Olympic Development Elite races, in their respective events at the Mt. SAC Relays this week. Price, a cross country All-American last fall, will compete in her very first 10K on Thursday night. Swenson and Yetzer will both compete in the 1,500 meters on Friday evening.
A Chance to Catch the Gophers Locally
A number of the Golden Gopher athletes will be competing at the Holst Invitational in St. Paul on Saturday. Among the Gophers competing in this meet will be the throwing corps.
Tzanakis Tosses Big Ten’s Leading Discus Throw
Minnesota’s top performance at the Mesa Classic was turned in by senior throw Nikki Tzanakis, who placed fourth in the invitational flight of the discus with a career-best throw of 180-1. Her throw is the third-best effort in Gopher history in the event and currently the top throw in the Big Ten, fifth nationally.
Dahl Runs Sub-Minute 400m Hurdles
Junior Sharyn Dahl clocked a time of 59.20 seconds in the 400 hurdles at the Sun Angel Classic to jump to No. 5 in the Gophers’ top-10 list in the event. The time currently ranks second in the Big Ten.
Gophers Win Two Events at Mesa Classic
Minnesota collected two event titles, one on the track and one in the field events.
Sharyn Dahl won the 400-meter hurdles on Friday, posting a time of 1 minute, 0.80 seconds. Teammate Kelly Stalpes was third in a time of 1:02.06. Kim Hovey captured the title in the invitational shot put with a throw of 47-3 3/4.
The top performance at the Mesa Classic was turned in by senior throw Nikki Tzanakis, who placed fourth in the invitational flight of the discus with a career-best throw of 180-1. Her throw is the third-best effort in Gopher history in the event.
Todea-Kay Willis and Stormy Nesbit placed second and third, respectively, in the triple jump. Willis landed a leap of 38-7 3/4, while Nesbit’s best jump was 37-11 1/4.
Dahl, Brooks Top Gophers at Sun Angel Classic
Sharyn Dahl and Alena Brooks recorded top-10 times in their events to top the Golden Gopher women’s track & field team’s outing at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Dahl became the sixth hurdler in Minnesota history to run a sub-minute time in the 400-meter hurdles. The Gopher junior placed third with her career-best time of 59.20 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
Brooks added her name to the Gophers’ top-10 list in the 800 meters. She placed seventh with a time of 2:08.18, the eighth-best time in Gopher history. Brooks also anchored the 4x100-meter relay that placed sixth in a time of 45.92 seconds. Joining Brooks on the relay were Todea-Kay Willis, Nyoka Giles and Chimerem Okoroji.
Willis added a third-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10 3/4 inches.
Other top-five finishes for the Gophers were Natalie Devine, who finished fourth in the high jump (5-7) and Kelsey Joson, who placed fifth in the triple jump (36-4 1/4).
Meet Three - UWRF Falcon Invitational
Minnesota also had several athletes compete at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invitational. Winning events at the meet were Jamie Vandenberg in the 1,500 meters (4:40.78), Rachel Drake in the 3,000 meters (10:25.42) and Samantha Sonnenberg in the pole vault (13-9 1/4).
The Golden Gopher Coaching Staff
Matt Bingle is in his fifth season as the Golden Gophers head women’s track & field coach and his ninth overall coaching in the Minnesota program. Bingle is a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year honoree. Bingle heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Gary Wilson (26th season, third as an assistant coach after 21 years as head coach)and Lynne Anderson (31st season).
