The 24th-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten with a 4-3 road victory at No. 53 Michigan State this afternoon. The Gophers put their four-match winning streak and undefeated Big Ten record on the line tomorrow when they visit No. 22 Michigan.
Minnesota won the doubles point for the tenth time in 14 matches this season and for the seventh time in its last eight dual matches. The Gophers won all three doubles matches for only the third time this year, as they also did not drop a doubles match against Drake on Feb. 25 and in a season-opening win against Marquette on Jan. 22.
Phillip Arndt and Sebastian Gallego pushed their doubles record to 10-3 on the year with an 8-2 win at No. 1. Tobias Wernet and Rok Bonin are now 5-5 on the season after winning 8-4 at No.2, while Brendan Ruddock and Julian Dehn improved their season record to 7-3 at third doubles with an 8-7 triumph.
In singles, Bonin dispatched Denis Bogatov 7-5, 6-0 at first singles to win his fourth straight match. Wernet prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and is 10-3 in dual matches this year. Dehn also earned his tenth win of the season (10-4) with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Drew Lied at the sixth position.
Ruddock fell to 9-3 on the year with a 6-3, 6-2 setback at No. 5 singles, while Arndt was downed 2-6, 6-4 (10-8) at the fourth slot. Austin Brooks defeated Gallego at No. 3 singles when the Minnesota senior retired after the Gophers had already secured the win. Each player had won one set.
After facing Michigan tomorrow, the Gophers return home for matches against Indiana and Purdue next weekend.
