UM's top two doubles tandems gave the team a boost by leading the way to a doubles competition victory.
Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn improved to 8-1 together in dual match play and 14-1 overall in 2010-11 by taking out Iowa's Austen Kauss and Jonas Dierckx 8-3. Iowa answered with a 9-7 win at No. 3, but 77th-ranked Sebastian Gallego and Phillip Arndt clinched the match's first point for Minnesota by beating UI's Marc Bruche and Will Vasos 8-5.
Iowa briefly tied the score 1-1 after Dierckx beat Brendan Ruddock in straight sets, but No. 100-ranked Tobias Wernet would give the Gophers a lead they wouldn't give back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bruche at the top position.
Arndt padded the lead by winning a two-set decision at No. 4 and Dehn secured the victory with another straight-set victory at No. 6. Gallego closed out the Minnesota scoring with his first singles win since March 25, a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Kauss.
Vasos rallied to defeat Bonin at the second spot to make the final score 5-2.
The men's tennis Big Ten Tournament begins on Thursday in Madison, Wis. The Gophers earned a first-round bye with their third-place finish and will face the winner of the first round match between Wisconsin and Penn State.
