The No. 20 Minnesota men's tennis team suffered its first home loss and first Big Ten loss of the season today when they were upset 4-3 by No. 27 Indiana. The Gophers, who had won five straight, fall to 13-3 overall and are now 4-1 in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers improve to 19-4 overall and a conference-best 6-0 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota played without Sebastian Gallego, who is a fixture in the team's top three in singles and partners with Phillip Arndt to form the No. 77-ranked doubles team.

The Gophers won the doubles point, but lost four singles matches as Indiana won its ninth straight dual match. It was the first time all season that Minnesota won the doubles point, but lost the overall match. Brendan Ruddock and Phillip Arndt were felled 8-2 by the 50th-ranked duo of Jeremy Langer and Santiago Gruter at No. 1 doubles.

Julian Dehn and Rok Bonin, who teamed together to win the doubles championship at the Lakewood Ranch Classic last fall, beat Stephen Vogl and Josh MacTaggart 8-4 at the second position. Tobias Wernet and Juan Pablo Ramirez cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 against Travis Neilson and Isade Juneau as Minnesota led 1-0 after doubles.

In singles, the Gophers received wins from Wernet and Arndt. Wernet won his fourth consecutive match with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Gruter at the second slot, while Arndt improved to 9-2 at fourth singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win against Claes Goransson.

The Hoosiers picked up wins at the first, third, fifth and sixth positions in singles. Langer tripped up Bonin 6-4, 7-5 at first singles, while 109th-ranked Josh MacTaggart handled Ruddock 6-1, 6-1. Juneau topped Dehn in three sets 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 and Vogl defeated Ramirez 6-2, 6-2.

The Gophers return to action at noon on Sunday when they host No. 64 Purdue. Minnesota then hosts Penn State and No. 3 Ohio State next weekend before finishing the regular season at Illinois and Iowa.
