Blog Recap: Minnesota vs. Fresno State
Coach Geoff Young examines matchups at 1-3 singles today against Fresno State, while associate head coach Urban Ljubic takes a look at matchups 4-6.
No. 1 singles
Rikus de Villiers: He is a great doubles player. Has good touch and comes forward. He plays very well at the net and has a great drop shot.
Tobias Wernet: Played Jean-Charles Diame last time at No. 3 so it is a different match-up this time. He has been playing really well so it should be a good match at No. 1 against de Villiers.
No. 2 singles
Remi Boutillier: He is an experienced player and has very good ground strokes and plays well from both sides. He does not give you much for free.
Rok Bonin: Like Wernet, he is also playing a different opponent this time. He lost to de Villiers in three sets in January. Playing Boutier will probably be long points in a long match with neither guy giving away anything for free.
No. 3 singles
Jean-Charles Diame: He is a junior who is very quick and has a good forehand. He competes really well.
Sebastian Gallego: Sebastian been playing better and better and been getting more fit from his injury. I think he will be in good form against Diame, and I also expect some long points in that match.
No. 4 singles:
Francis Alcantara: He is a short guy from the Philippines. He is very steady and a baseliner. He is fast and good. He does not have one knockout weapon, but makes up for that with his efficiency.
Phillip Arndt: Phil is playing the same opponent this time as he did in January. He is going to look to play big off his serve and his return is the most powerful weapon that he has.
No. 5 singles
Nick Papac: He is a lefty with a pretty big serve. His technique is a little unusual and he has a better forehand than backhand. He plays on the baseline for the most part.
Brendan Ruddock: When he is on, he is on and his pace is tough to keep up with. I look for him to put pressure on his opponent and basically do not let him hit more than three or four balls in a point.
No. 6 singles
David Ayoun: He is a short French guy who is a typical baseliner at number six.
Julian Dehn: A crafty lefty. He is going to need to move Ayun and use his slice and use his weapons coming to the net. I expect a pretty long match there, fighting for every point.
