Gopher 4x400m Relay Earns NCAA Berth

The Minnesota 4x400-meter relay of Jacob Capek, Harun Abda, Kevin Bradley and John Holton earned a berth into the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as one of the top-12 relays from the NCAA West Prelim Meet in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday. Drake University will host the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The relay garnered an automatic berth by placing third in their heat, clocking a season-best time of 3 minutes, 7.82 seconds, the ninth-fastest time in Minnesota history and the fastest time clocked by a Gopher relay since 2006.

Micah Hegerle made the final in the discus but was unable to move up into a position to qualify for Des Moines. He finished 16th with a throw of 175-3. Hegerle will, however, compete at the NCAA Championships in the hammer.
Hassan Mead placed 15th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 13:52.24.
Two Gophers competed in the triple jump. Oladipo Fagbemi finished 38th with a leap of 48-2. Addison Demer fouled his first two jumps then withdrew with an injury.
In addition to Hegerle in the hammer, other Gophers who qualified for the NCAA Championships in previous days of the Prelim Meet were Brock Spandl in the pole vault and Abda in the 800 meters.
