Five Minnesota men’s track athletes – Harun Abda, Kevin Bradley, Jacob Capek, Micah Hegerle and John Holton - were accorded All-America Second Team honors by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. These Golden Gophers earned national accolades for their performance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last week in Des Moines, Iowa.
Athletes that scored at the NCAA meet are named to the USTFCCCA All-America First Team, while athletes that finished ninth through 16th are USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honorees. Athletes that participated in the NCAA Championships, but did not finish among the top 16 are recognized as Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Abda, a sophomore from Fridley, Minn., earned Second-Team All-America honors in two events, the 800-meter run and as a member of the Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay. Abda placed 12th in the 800 meters. Joining Abda on the 4x400-meter relay that placed 11th were redshirt freshman Capek and sophomores Bradley and Holton.
Hegerle, a sophomore, captured his national citation in the hammer throw with a 12th-place showing.
Senior pole vaulter Brock Spandl earned USTFCCCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.
This is the first year the USTFCCCA has awarded the All-America honors in this fashion.
