The tournament is part of the US Open National Playoffs, which is a series of tournaments that gives any player 14 years of age or older who meets the eligibility requirements the opportunity to qualify for the 2011 US Open. The winner of each Sectional Qualifying Tournament in each division will advance to the US Open National Playoffs Championships in their respective division taking place in New Haven, Conn., in August.
Numerous future, current and former Gophers are competing in the event. Tobias Wernet, who was 24-10 during his senior year at Minnesota last year, is competing in the men's draw. Wernet was a unanimous first-team all-Big Ten selection and finished the year at Minnesota's top player. Phillip Arndt, who was 21-11 last year as a Minnesota junior, is also in the field as in incoming freshman Eric Frueh.
Incoming freshmen Aria Lambert and Julia Courter will be competing in the women's draw. Lambert, who is from Excelsior, Minn., is a former Minnesota high school stat champion. The future Gophers will be joined by Minnesota assistant coach Daria Panova in the field.
Wernet will partner with Dana Young, wife of Minnesota men's tennis coach Geoff Young, in mixed doubles play. Former Gophers Lindsay Risebrough and Reven Stephens are also competing in mixed doubles as are former Gopher Erik Donley and former Minnesota women's tennis volunteer coach Imke Reimers. Current Gopher Alexa Palen will also play with Nick Crossley.
