The University of Minnesota men's tennis team announced its 2011-12 schedule today. The Gophers, led by sixth-year head coach Geoff Young, begin their season with six fall tournaments.
Minnesota begins the year by heading to Athens, Ga., for the Sept. 23-25 Southern Intercollegiate Championship. In October, the Gophers will compete in the ITA All-American Championship, ITA Regional Championship and the Big Ten Singles Championship.
Minnesota will then host the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center from Nov. 3-6 before concluding fall play at the Lakewood Ranch Invitational in Florida.
Minnesota begins dual-match competition on Jan. 21 when it plays host to Marquette. The squad's first Big Ten match is Feb. 25 at home against Wisconsin. The Gophers also host Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Big Ten newcomer Nebraska this season. Minnesota's conference road schedule will take the Gophers to Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue and Iowa.
In addition to Marquette, Minnesota's non-conference home schedule includes matches with Arizona and DePaul. The Gophers will also host Drake on March 9 in Rochester, Minn.
The team will face Virginia Tech, California and Cal Poly on the road this season. The Gophers will also play San Diego in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in January in Berkeley, Calif. They will also play either California or LSU as part of the event.
Coach Young's squad finished 19-6 last season and ended the year ranked No. 23 in the nation. The Gophers advanced to the Big Ten tournament final and qualified for the NCAA tournament.
