Updated Season Stats

The 25th-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 victory against Marquette at the Baseline Tennis Center on Saturday night. The Gophers clinched the win after Mathieu Froment, Michael Sicora, and Julian Dehn won their singles matches. Phillip Arndt, Leandro Toledo, and Rok Bonin also came out on top in singles play.

Minnesota started on a positive note by winning the doubles point.

UM's Eric Frueh and Juan Pablo Ramirez won a decisive 8-2 match against MU's Cameron Tehrani and James Stark at No. 3 and the 50th-ranked duo of Dehn and Bonin took down the Golden Eagles' Jonathan Schwerin and Vukasin Teofanovic 8-4 at No. 2 to secure the match's first point.

Dan Mamalat and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley of Marquette beat No. 55 doubles tandem Leandro Toledo and Phillip Arndt 8-5 in the top flight.

In singles, Froment became the first winner of the night by beating Drake Kakar 6-3, 6-1 in the sixth position and Dehn followed with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set defeat of Schwerin at No. 4. Sicora gave Minnesota the decisive fourth point when he beat Logan Collins 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 1, Arndt added a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mamalat. Arndt's win came after Mamalat defeated him 362 days ago in the 2011 season opener for Marquette's only point in a 6-1 loss.

Toledo, ranked 118th nationally by the ITA, picked up his first collegiate dual-match singles win in a super tiebreaker over Gutierrez Crowley, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7), in the No. 2 slot. Bonin capped the night with a three-set victory over Teofanovic at No. 3.

After winning only once by a 7-0 score in 2011, The Gophers shut their opponent out in their first match of 2012.

The win improved the UM's all-time record against Marquette to 5-0. It was Minnesota's fourth consecutive season-opening victory.

The Gophers return to action next weekend when they travel to Berkeley, Calif. next weekend to participate in the ITA Kickoff. UM will play 27th-ranked San Diego and either No. 14 California or No. 33 LSU.
