San Diego Outlasts Minnesota In ITA Kick-Off Weekend

The No. 25 Minnesota men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 27 San Diego at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the University of California campus on Sunday evening.
Minnesota is in California participating in the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Gophers will now face No. 32 LSU on Monday, as the Tigers lost 4-0 to No. 13 California earlier in the day.
San Diego won the doubles point when they claimed victory at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The 55th-ranked duo of Phillip Arndt and Leandro Toledo played No. 1 doubles and were beaten 8-5 by Nikola Bubnic and Thibault Visy. Eric Frueh and Michael Sicora lost 8-6 to Clarke Spinosa and Victor Pugliese at the third spot.
Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn, who are ranked No. 50, had their match against Ciaran Fitzgerald and Patrick Pohlmann abandoned.
The Gophers rebounded in singles and quickly took a 2-1 lead after Arndt dropped Bubnic 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 and Bonin won 6-4, 6-4 against Spinosa at No. 3.
The four remaining matches in singles all went three sets and San Diego was victorious in each one. Pohlmann, who is ranked No. 92, leveled the match 2-2 after beating 118th-ranked Toledo 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (1) at second singles. The Toreros went up 3-2 after Fitzgerald beat Sicora 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3.
San Diego clinched the win after 61st-ranked Visy defeated Dehn 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at fourth singles. The match at No. 6 singles ended right after Dehn's match and Pugliese prevailed 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1) against Mathieu Froment.
After playing LSU tomorrow, the Gophers return to action on Feb. 4 at Louisville.
