Action began in Minneapolis today with the start of the 2012 ITA Central Region Championships. Minnesota representatives finished with a 3-2 record on the day while freshman Ruben Weber remained undefeated in his first competition as a Golden Gopher.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Eric Frueh faced No. 7 seed Tom Blackwell of Nebraska, and delivered an upset by winning 7-5, 6-3. He then met Arthur Romanet (Bradley) in the third round but unfortunately fell in three after a long battle through a tiebreaker (6-2, 2-6, 1-0).
Weber also received a first round bye before plowing through the competition to earn a spot in the main draw. He defeated Drake's Grant Tesmer 7-6(4), 6-1 followed by a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ashton Kalhorn of Bradley.
Tucker Saxon also competed for the Gophers in the qualifiers but his time ended short after a first-round loss to Western Illinois' Mitch Granger (8-6).
Weber will join Gopher teammates Brendan Ruddock, Leandro Toledo, Juan Pablo Ramirez, Mathieu Froment, and Rok Bonin in tomorrow's competition. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with both doubles and singles action.
