The Minnesota men's tennis team dropped its third match of the season tonight at No. 36 Louisville. The Gophers, who are ranked No. 29, were felled by ranked foes San Diego and LSU last weekend at the ITA Kick-Off event in Berkeley, Calif. Louisville improved to 4-3 on the year, while Minnesota is now 1-3.
Minnesota jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point against the Cardinals. The Gophers staked wins at first and third doubles to secure the point. Rok Bonin and Julian Dehn, who are ranked No. 50, played No. 1 doubles for the first time this year. They prevailed with a 9-7 win against Robert Hall and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Leandro Toledo and Juan Pablo Ramirez teamed together for the first time this year and won 8-3 at third doubles against Van Damrongsri and Luis Elizondo. Phillip Arndt and Jack Hamburg also played together for the first time this season, but lost 8-5 at the second position to Andrew Carter and Albert Wagner. Hamburg, who missed all of the fall season and the beginning of spring season with an injury, made his collegiate debut.
Louisville won all six contests in singles to win the match. Wagner leveled the match 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Dehn at No. 4 singles. Hall then topped Hamburg 6-4, 6-4 at the sixth spot to give Louisville the lead for good.
Carter, who is ranked No. 113, took down Arndt at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1. Stiefelmeyer secured the Louisville victory with a 7-6, 7-5 win against Toledo, who is ranked No. 118 at the second position.
Bonin lost 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 to Michael Lippens at No. 3 singles, while Michael Sicora was upended at No. 5 singles to Chris Simich.
The Gophers, who have played three straight matches away from Minneapolis, return home to face No. 56 Arizona on Feb. 11 and No. 73 DePaul on Feb. 12. Minnesota plays its first Big Ten match of the year against Wisconsin on Feb. 25 at home. All three matches are at Baseline Tennis Center and are free and open to the public.
