Minnesota will travel south to the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa this weekend. The two-day tournament will run Saturday and Sunday at the Finkbine Golf Course. The event can be followed live at golfstat.com.
The Gophers will be in competition for the first time since the LSU Invitational two weeks ago. In Baton Rouge, the Gophers placed seventh in the tournament. Junior Erik Van Rooyen tied for third.
Head coach John Carlson is excited about his team's opportunity against a field that includes many Big Ten foes. "I feel like we can play with any of these teams. We proved it at the Big Ten Matchplay. I look for us to have an outstanding performance."
The Field: An 11-team field will head to Iowa for the Classic. Minnesota will compete with five other Big Ten teams in Iowa City. Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Nebraska join the Gophers in tuning up for the Big Ten Championships. Iowa State, Charlotte, UMKC, Washington State, and Miami University round out the field. The Hawkeyes, hosts of the tournament, come in as the highest ranked team at 26.
The Course: The par-72 Finkbine Golf Course is located at the edge of Iowa's campus in Iowa City. The course is 7,180 yards in length. It has hosted a number of prestigious tournaments including the Amana VIP Pro-Am for more than 20 years.
Notes: The next tournament for the Gophers will take part in the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind. Last year, Minnesota placed eight. The tournament will last three days on the final weekend of April.
