The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team is beginning to narrow its focus on the start of its 2014 season. The Golden Gophers held the first of two meet simulations on Monday afternoon at Peik Gymnasium.

Head coach Meg Stephenson returns nine gymnasts from the squad that captured a share of the inaugural Big Ten regular-season championship a season ago and welcomes five newcomers to the team.

The team competed on the vault, bars, beam, and floor exercise at the meet.

Seven Gophers did the vault: Kaitlin Rahon, Hanna Nordquist, Bailie Holst, Cierra Tomson, Kylie Schermann, Jenny Covers, and Lindsay Mable.

Rahon, Holst, Covers, Mable, Tomson, and Madie Hanley then performs on the uneven bars.

Nordquist kicked off the beam routines and was followed by Holst, Rahon, Covers, Tomson, Mable, Schermann, and Justine Cherwink.

The team capped the afternoon with the floor exercise, where Nordquist, Holst, Cherwink, Covers, Tomson, Schermann, Mable, and Rahon were participants.

Minnesota's next simulation meet is Monday, Dec. 9.

Following the holiday break, Minnesota will hold its annual Intrasquad Meet on Saturday, Jan. 4 at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers then open their regular season schedule the following week when they host Air Force and Lindenwood.
