AMES, IOWA - When looking at the results of Sunday afternoon's meet at Iowa State, it might make a person do a double-take at the team totals.
Minnesota freshman Lindsay Mable won three events and sophomore Jenny Covers captured the all-around title, but the Gophers dropped just their second meet of the season in a 195.550-195.025 team loss at ISU's Hilton Coliseum.
Mable and Covers each scored 9.875 on vault to tie for first place on the apparatus, while junior Kayla Slechta was third with a 9.825. Senior Shannon Golich and sophomore Kylie Schermann added scores of 9.800, as Minnesota recorded its best event total of the afternoon with a 49.175 on vault in the second rotation.
The performance on vault came after the Gophers had a pair of falls on bars to open with a season-low 47.900. Slechta led Minnesota with a 9.775 on bars, while Covers and sophomore Cierra Tomson each had a 9.700 for the Gophers.
Minnesota moved to floor exercise, where Mable scored a 9.900 to win the event and Schermann tied for second with a 9.875, but the Gophers' team total of 49.025 was .025 less than the host Cyclones.
Mable also scored a 9.900 on balance beam to capture her third event title of the day, while Golich and Schermann each recorded scores of 9.800 to tie for fourth, but Minnesota's eight-tenths deficit after its start on bars was too much to overcome.
The Golden Gophers have another road meet next weekend, as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete against the top-ranked Florida Gators at 6:00 p.m. CT on Friday evening.
