Minnesota Wraps Second Day at Regionals

NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Eric Frueh and redshirt junior Tucker Saxon both won in qualifying play Sunday at the ITA Central Region Championships in Norman, Okla. The Gophers also began doubles play at the event, which runs through Sunday.
To start the day, Saxon downed top-seeded Jan Pehnec of Oral Roberts, while Frueh defeated Southern Illinois-Carbondale's Symon Opieczonek. Sophomore Jeremy Lynn, who also reached the third qualifying round, fell to UMKC's Andrey Smirnov.
Saxon and Frueh will join teammates Leandro Toledo, Jack Hamburg, Felix Corwin, Ruben Weber, Mathieu Froment, and Matic ?pec in the main draw, which will begin Saturday. No. 22-ranked Leandro Toledo will be the third seed, while fellow senior Jack Hamburg will be the No. 13 seed and freshman Felix Corwin will be seeded 14th. Weber is expected to make his season debut in the round of 64.
Saturday will feature two rounds of singles. Non-winners in the first round of the main draw will be relegated to the back draw.
In doubles, tandems of No. 11-ranked and second-seeded Hamburg and Froment and sixth-seeded Toledo and Corwin each won three matches after receiving first-round byes to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament, which will be played Sunday.
Hamburg and Froment earned victories against pairings from UMKC and Iowa before ousting Linus Erhart and Scott Elsass of Nebraska, 8-7 (6). Playing together for the first time, Toledo and Corwin took down doubles teams from Arkansas and Wichita State before closing out the day with an 8-6 triumph over the Cornhuskers' Bradford Zitsch and Dusty Boyer.
Spec and Frueh won in their first two doubles matches before falling to No. 40-ranked Axel Alvarez and Dane Webb of host Oklahoma in the round of 16. Hamburg and Froment will face Alvarez and Webb in the semifinal round.
The Gophers will next play at the Big Ten Indoor Championships Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Baseline Tennis Center following play at the Central Regionals.
